H.R. Giger was born in Chur, Switzerland, in 1940. As a child he developed a strong passion for all things surreal and macabre. His need to express himself and share the unique aspects of his powerful imagination drew him to the visual arts. Giger got his start with small ink drawings before progressing to oil paintings. For most of his career, Giger has worked predominantly in airbrush, creating monochromatic canvasses depicting surreal, nightmarish dreamscapes. However, he has now largely abandoned large airbrush works in favour of works with pastels, markers or ink.
His most distinctive stylistic innovation is that of a representation of human
bodies and machines in a cold, interconnected relationship, he described as
"biomechanical". His paintings often display fetishist sexual imagery.
His main influences were painters Ernst Fuchs and Salvador Dalí.
Giger suffers from night terrors and his paintings are all to some extent inspired by his experiences with that particular sleep disorder. He studied interior and
industrial design at the School of Commercial Art in Zurich (from 1962 to 1965)
and made his first paintings as a means of art therapy.

In this image, Giger has portrayed a Medusa like woman, with a cyborg theme.
The woman is faced forward with her eyes closed whilst in a calm manner, like she has been soothed out of pain and is reflecting on what has just happened. She looks peaceful and maybe as if she is anticipating something, waiting for something to happen and thinking on that exact thought. Medusa is a greek myth who was extremely unappealing, she had a head of snaked and anytime someone looked at her they turned to stone. This woman looks more peaceful than this, the band around her head makes her look like a princess. Gigers painting looks more of a "calm before the storm". Giger uses blue and grey tones with faint shadows. This makes the emotion very calm, if Giger used strong tones and harsh shadows this painting would be a lot more dramatic and wouldn't have the same emotion.

In this painting, the woman has a stone dead glare, that sees right through you, it almost feels like she's reading and analysing you herself. She has creepy cyborg features on her forehead and above, which makes me think she is a cyborg programmed to do so.She has a skull on her head, representing death, so this could mean that she was once a human being. He turns the skull into a spider type creature creatively, which then has a snake coming out of it, slithering down her forehead. Giger uses lots of greys, whites and blacks to create his painting. It#s very contrasting making it dramatic and effective.
